Early Learning & Child Development
Human babies are born at a much earlier stage of development than other mammals. For example in only a few hours after birth, the giraffe is able to stand and walk, whereas for a human this can take not hours but many, many months. Babies enter the world helpless and utterly dependent upon their caregivers. This vulnerability makes the baby very sensitive to what is going on around them.
However, do not be fooled. Even before birth, the young infant, is learning about body position, movement, speech sounds and vibrations. Having entered into the world, the young infant is ready to continue to learn at a remarkable rate. As the adult, we are given the most important teaching tools of all – our face, body and voice. These three together create a ‘nurturing blanket’ from which the young infant can evolve into a lively toddler, and an imaginative, creative and independent thinker - ready for the next stage of their development. This is achieved not by simply being told what to do, but by the child leading, being immersed and involved in their own learning through play. Watching a young infant grow into a toddler and young child is a ‘wonder to behold.’
