My Personal Story

"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."

- Edward Everett Hale

My Story

My interest in differences in learning styles emerged from my own childhood. Having mild cerebral palsy from birth created some difficulty with processing information, speech and language development and coordination. I have many memories of coming home to my wonderful parents in tears as I was unable to fully understand the day’s lessons only to find them later sitting with me and re-creating these learning experiences using very unique styles of teaching. I soon learnt that teaching and learning does not come in one format and to focus on what I can do, rather than what I cannot do.

However, perhaps the most defining personal part of this story has been as a mother to a remarkable young person on the autistic spectrum with sensory processing difficulties and associated general anxiety disorder. Watching my daughter develop and join her in her successes and challenges has been inspirational. I have sat with my daughter night after night, helping her to self-regulate, and coped with the challenges of sleep deprivation and exhaustion, only to see her get up again and give life another go! Our journey continues. We go forwards and backwards and aim to learn from our mistakes. Some days are challenging, while others are easier to embrace, but we continue to look for the positives in everyday.

There is no end to learning, - there is no set way to learn – only new openings and experiences to encounter. To find out more about my journey as a parent and some of the strategies which have helped me to support my daughter, please read the presentation I have given for Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) courses.
